5 tips on how to hire a flooring contractor

Choosing the perfect flooring for a project is only the first step. You want to make sure your flooring is installed properly for the best result. While you may be handy with a trowel, depending on the type of flooring and how complicated the project is, you can DIY or you can hire an installer to ensure the job is done correctly and your floor looks great.

If you’re thinking about calling in a professional, here are five things to discuss with your flooring contractor.

1. Insurance

Find out if your installer is licensed and ask for proof of insurance. A contractor may have a general contractor’s license, but do they hold a license specifically for flooring? 

Insurance is very important in the event that an accident happens on site during the installation (to a worker or subcontractor or to the flooring itself) because if the contractor isn’t licensed, you can be held liable. Depending on your state laws, you may also want to inquire if the contractor has worker’s compensation.

2. Experience

Request references your installer. Check their online reviews. An installer’s reputation and years of experience should be considered before hiring someone. If you’re installing vinyl plank flooring, you’ll want to know about the installer’s experience with installing vinyl plank flooring and not just tile or carpet.

3. Cost 

Ask upfront about all of the costs involved for your project. What is the payment schedule? What do you need to pay to get the project started? When is the final payment due? What kinds of unforeseen issues could potentially tack on additional costs?

Get bids from a few different installers and what’s included, which can vary, so you can get an idea of what a fair price would be for your budget.

4. Process

Get details on everything you can expect from your installer, including what will be required of you. For example, you may have to move furniture and store it somewhere before the installers can get to work or perhaps they can do it for you at an extra cost. 

Verify who will be your point of contact throughout the project, how long they estimate the project may take, what the project timeline might look like and whether they will also handle the cleanup at the end of the project. 

5. Warranty 

Check with your installer on what types of warranties are available. While your flooring manufacturer may offer one warranty, does your installer offer a separate warranty for the installation?
